The lay of the land.
How to find us — and what the country looks like once you do.
The ranch sits about five miles northeast of Broadus, in the far southeastern corner of Montana — genuine Big-Sky country. It’s a bit of a haul from anywhere, and the getting-there is part of the trip.
Fly in, rent a rig, and point it toward Broadus.
Three airports put you within striking distance. Plan on renting a car and driving yourself to Broadus. When you get to town, someone from the ranch will meet you at the Powder River County Courthouse and lead you the rest of the way out. Guests arrive on Sunday and head home the following Saturday.
Ten miles of gravel, and worth every one.
From headquarters, Cow Camp is about ten more miles out — an eighteen-to-twenty-minute drive on a gravel road with breathtaking views the whole way. Keep an eye out: you’ll likely see antelope dotting the meadows, big birds of prey lifting off the sandrock, and cattle grazing the open range.
Cell service comes and goes out here, so download your directions before you leave town — and then let the quiet take over.
Getting around the Leffingwell Ranch
This is a real, working cattle ranch spread across a few dozen square miles of Powder River County. It’s a true “Big-Sky” experience in big country with wide open horizons, room to breathe, and land that stretches farther than you can ride in a day.
One outfit, spread across the country.
Headquarters sits in the middle of the ranch — the main corrals and Mike and Maria’s place, close to the summer pastures. It’s where most days start: you’ll meet at the barn, catch your horse, and ride out from there.
The east end is Mary and Dustin’s, where the young cattle graze in spring and the bulls winter in the rolling hills and river bottoms. Cow Camp sits out west in range-cattle country, looking over the late-summer and fall pastures. Between them runs the Powder River, alfalfa in the bottoms, sagebrush and juniper canyons climbing up to grass and rock.
